Symptoms:

Sent messages don't get filed, but received ones do.

 

Cause:

The Outlook option: Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder is not set correctly for the type of mail account.

 

Resolution:

Account type: Microsoft Exchange

 

Outlook 2010/2013

In the Email Options settings reached by selecting File > Options > Mail > Save messages:
Ensure Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder is checked

 

Outlook 2007

In the Email Options settings reached by selecting Tools > Options > Preferences > Email options:
Ensure Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder is checked

 

Account type: IMAP

 

Outlook 2010/2013

In the Email Options settings reached by selecting File > Options > Mail > Save messages:
Ensure Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder is unchecked

 

Outlook 2007

In the Email Options settings reached by selecting Tools > Options > Preferences > Email options:
Ensure Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder is unchecked
